Dior Gives Seventh Photography and Visual Arts Award for Young Talents

PHOTO OP: The Dior Photography and Visual Arts Award for Young Talents this year went to Chia Huang for her “Silence is speaking” photographic series.

The Taiwanese student from the École National Supérieure des Beaux-Arts was received the award in Arles, France, on Friday night.

The session marked the seventh time LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton-owned Dior partnered with Luma Arles, a campus for artists, and the École Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie, also in Arles.

The competition’s jury this year was headed by French photographer Brigitte Lacombe. It included, as well, Julie Jones, Laurent Montaron, Marina Hoffmann, Simon Baker and Peter Philips, creative and image director for Dior Makeup.

For her series, Huang traveled to Taitung, a small town in Taiwan, and photographed two autistic brothers who do not communicate through a formal language and live with their ill father.

“These poignant, sensitive and painful images manage to decipher their noiseless communication and their body language, while ‘documenting the silent sounds within them,’” said Dior in a statement.

Huang is to receive a 10,000-euro grant from the house. Her series will be shown at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris starting in early 2025.

Chinese artist Yiding Wang also received a jury honorable mention from the Shanghai institute of Visual Arts for his video, called “Go Back Home.” It features a young man carrying a blossoming peach tree on his back to his father’s hometown to honor his father’s last wishes.

Huang’s photos, as well as Wang’s video and the works of the 10 other competition finalists will be on display at the Lampisterie, at Luma Arles, through Sept. 29.
