Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi defied Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to host Deputy President William Ruto for Iftar in Malindi yesterday.
ODM through Secretary General Edwin Sifuna had threatened to take disciplinary action against its members who had endorsed William Ruto’s 2022 Presidential bid.
In what is seen as dare against the Party and its Party leader Right Hon. Raila Odinga, Kingi hosted Ruto who was accompanied by Majority Leader Aden Duale and Kwale Governor Salim Mvurya who are part of the team championing his 2022 presidential bid.
The Iftar was hosted in Malindi, the heart of the Constituency represented by Former Kilifi Women Rep Aisha Jumwa who became the first ODM Legislator from the Coast to declare her support to William Ruto in 2022 Presidential bid.
Curiously, Governor Kingi was absent at a similar Iftar where Governor Joho hosted ODM Party leader Raila Odinga last week in Mombasa, further confirming drifting from the party towards Ruto who is keen on winning the region ahead of 2022.
Governor Joho and Kingi were close friends and Raila Odinga’s pointmen at the Coast region.
While Governor Joho has declared going for the Presidency under ODM Party in 2022, Governor Kingi has been calling for the formation of a Coast Party with Ruto assuring him of support and willingness to bankroll it.
A keen look at Ruto’s strategy points towards focusing on the populous Mijikenda Community Coastal vote, the Mijikenda are the main victims of exclusion, seclusion and marginalization within the region.
If his strategy is executed well, it will be the biggest offer to the Mijikenda community in recent history, they will grab and run with it further destabilizing ODM Party in the region.
