Reports reaching Kenya Live News suggest that Kenya’s popular musician ‘Queen of Ohangla’ also known as Maureen Achieng Otiu, or more popularly as Lady Maureen and her entire band, Nyar N’gato Traditional Dancers are currently remanded in Tanzanian jail.

The development has thrown local benga music fraternity into a spin as fellow musicians, promoters, fans as well as producers have been scrambling this week to raise funds to go towards payment of fines slapped on the musician and members of her band in Tanzania where she had gone to perform.

Lady Maureen and members of her band were arrested and charged in court on unspecified charges before the Judge slapped fines on the accused who face six months in prison on default. The total amount required is reportedly Ksh450,000/-.

Lady Maureen was the first Kenyan musician to do a song in praise of US President Barack Obama and has seen her popularity skyrocket in East Africa as she curved a niche among the established Benga musicians in the country.

Her song in praise of the Gor Mahia football team hit the nation like wildfireand hit the charts at No. 1 for many years.
