Orange Democratic Movement ODM has issued a statement threatening to take action against members elected on the party ticket but openly campaigning with DP William Ruto over his 2022 Presidential bid.
Through the Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, ODM has warned the leaders against defying directive of the Party’s National Executive Council ( NEC) and the party leader Right Hon. Raila Odinga.
Sifuna’s statement comes a day after a section of Coast leaders led by Coast Parliamentary Group Chairman Suleiman Dori told off the Deputy Leader and Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho against his 2022 Presidential bid.
Dori took issue with his Party leader Raila Odinga for misleading Joho that a Coast leader can also ascend to the top seat.
“Whereas the party does not seek to limit members’ rights to express themselves, we consider these expressions of support for 2022 candidates an affront on the party especially because the Party through its NEC passed resolutions at its recent retreat resolving to focus solely on the building bridges initiative,” Sifuna said.
Sifuna added that some of the said leaders who “engaged in premature campaigns for Ruto” are members of the party’s National Executive Council and are expected to abide by its decisions in line with Political Party’s conduct.
“The Party through its appropriate organs will now consider disciplinary action against these members should they persist in their contempt of Party resolutions and directions from the Party Leader,” reads the statement.
Jomvu MP Badi Twalib and Kinango MP Benjamin Tayari both elected on ODM joined Msambweni MP Suleiman Dori in pledging support to William Ruto to continue spearheading Jubilee’s development agenda.
