There was anxiety in Kisii County this morning when Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua and Kisii Deputy Governor Joash Maangi narrowly escaped death when a foot bridge they were standing on collapsed into the raging River Gucha.

According to the Official Spokesperson of the Kisii County Government Maseme Machuka, the two leaders were inspecting road projects within Ogembo Town, and decided to take a detour to view River Gucha.

The tragedy occurred when the footbridge on which they were standing caved in due to the large number of people who stood on it. The structural support was overwhelmed by the weight and caved in plunging the leaders into the raging waters.

The two were quickly rescued from the river and taken to hospital for check up.

Governor Mutua, who is in Kisii County on an official visit, and his host the Deputy Governor Maangi were reportedly deeply shaken but unhurt in the incident and they later continued with their tour of various development projects in then region .

Two journalists who sustained minor injuries were taken to Kisii
Teaching and Referral Hospital for treatment.

Maseme told Kenya Live News that the Ogembo Post Office –

Nyakorokoro footbridge was constructed by the Ministry of Public Works as part of the Economic Stimulus Project
under the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).
