Anxiety gripped the Nairobi Governor’s home at the upmarket Nyari Estate earlier this morning when Sonko household woke up and found themselves with no armed police guards.
Kenya Live News learnt Sonko was alerted about the missing guards by his home staff and immediately begun a flurry of calls to establish what was going on.
The governor woke up early in order to plan to join President Uhuru and his deputy William Ruto who were scheduled to attend an interdenominational nemorial service for the 48 victims of the Patel dam tragedy was today held at Solai AIC church, Nakuru County.
It later emerged that Sonko was left with two bodyguards after thirteen others were unilaterally withdrawn by the National Police Service.
According to government security sources, the withdrawal, is part of a government plan to recall 5,000 officers attached to VIPs and deploy them to preasing security stations.
Governors are supposed to have a maximum of four bodyguards but most of them have exceeded the limit.
Officers will be withdrawn from other county chiefs, senators, parastatals and others VIPs as well and assigned general duties.
Sonko however read political mischief in the night security withdrawal and stopped short of declaring his own security was in danger.
The Nairobi Governor has of late been involved in a public spat with Interior PS Karanja Kibicho as Sonko has resisted attempts at micromanaging the Nairobi County by national government officials.
