Hon. Raila Odinga is currently attending the Single Africa Air Transport Market session ahead of the #PIDAWEEK2018 Opening Ceremony in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe.
The High Representative for Infrastructure Development in Africa has addressed challenges Africans face traveling within the continent. Painting a picture of how inconveniencing the processes in place are, he has given an example of someone who charters a flight to fly from Nairobi for Abuja. He/she will need clearances from civil aviation authorities of about 4 countries to be allowed to fly over them.
This takes too much time and can be discouraging. Worse still is where one has to fly outside Africa first, to connect to an African destination, case in point, flying to Dubai to connect to Casablanca. Raila has said these processes belong to Stone Age and they impede the continent’s efforts towards effectively tapping its huge potential, a market of over 2 billion people. We need free skies across the continent to enhance trade within.
